What is the main difference between Cover 1, Cover 2, and Cover 3 defensive schemes?
I am also gathering Cover 2 is weak against the run, because Addai was having his way against the Saints...
Answer:
Cover 1 is you have 1 of your two safeties deep in coverage, usually the middle of the field. Cover 2 is both safeties deep, taking halves of the field. Cover 3 is 3 defensive backs dropping deep taking thirds of the field.
Cover 2 can be good against the run with the right personal. It is all about gap control and having defensive tackles that can keep the linebackers free to roam and make plays. The reason why it can be weak against the run is because the safeties, even if they read run have to keep dropping back just in case it is a play action and the QB goes deep to a reciever with no help over the top.
That happened last night on Harrisons TD the safety made a bad read and was to slow to help on top of Harrison.
