Is Babylon 5 for me? In Depth answers please?
I am a major Star Trek (classic & TNG) and Doctor Who (classic and NuWho) fan. But I was wondering if I'd get into Babylon 5? And Battlestar Galactica now that I think of it... How are those?
I'm not really big on cheesey graphics but I sure got eased into them when it came to classic Who. I know that Babylon 5 seems to be a series that lots of sci-fi fans seem to love or absolutely abhorrently hate. Why?
Is one harder to get into than the other?
If it means anything, I love Big Bang Theory and I often understand the references, just not the comic book ones... I think the physics of black holes is fascinating, even if I stink at math.
I don't like watching sci-fi for the sake of sci-fi, I really do want actual plot lines and characterization. I really like Sherlock (BBC Sherlock Holmes thing), Fringe, House, and even got into the X-files a little.

I think you'd like Babylon 5. I just got done watching the whole series again - I started it again last fall for the first time in probably 8 or 10 years (so it was kind of fresh to me again). In my opinion, the writing is fantastic - there are great characterizations, and there's a massive story arc that runs through the whole series, especially seasons 1-4. The original plan was a bit different, but the production team didn't know if the show would get picked up for a fifth season, so they wrapped up the major plot lines by the end of season 4. In my opinion, season 2 is actually the weakest, though it still has a lot of good stories in it. The cast and characters in the show are excellent, some really creative makeup effects, but the space cgi effects could be a little lacking at times. This didn't get in the way for me, though I prefer model effects over cgi. I would also say that the Vorlons are the most mysterious/bizarre/interesting alien race I think I've ever seen on any TV show. If you go for it, make sure to watch it from the pilot ('The Gathering') onward.
By the way, Doctor Who is my absolute favorite show of all time (both classic and new). And I'm a big fan of Star Trek TNG. And I liked Sherlock also... waiting impatiently for the next miniseries.
As for Battlestar Galactica, I loved the original series, but couldn't get into the new series. Just way too dark. I watched the first miniseries and wanted to shoot myself at the end (not really) because it was so depressing...
One other great show you might look into if you haven't already is Warehouse 13.
