I've just found a few containers of 35mm film (the black cylinders with grey lids), and they are without their lids. Chances are the film has already expired, but does anyone know what would be the best way to store them from here?

I keep all my film in the refrigerator.
Film has a "shelf life" (expiration date) which the manufacturer calculates for storage under normal conditions of heat and humidity. After that date has passed, the chemical composition of the film, especially color film, begins to change as a result of heat and humidity. This usually causes shifts in the color which results in poor quality prints. There can also be a loss of sensitivity which can cause over or under exposure.
If the film has been exposed to higher temperatures by attic storage or near a heat source then the process is accelerated.
You might shoot one roll of unimportant pictures and see what happens.
